The over 50s are finding it increasingly difficult to get back to work
after being made redundant, a charity is claiming.
The number of over 50s who are among the long-term unemployed has risen to
the highest level for a decade. Charity Age UK claims that the number of
people in this age group who have been out of work for over a year has
reached 170,000. The charity has stated that there is a "devastating legacy
of unemployment" among this age range.
The figures reflect the fact that older workers have been among the worst
hit by redundancies and cost-cutting measures during the recession.
Many over 50s claim they are viewed as having slower computer and IT skills
than younger people and find it more difficult to get a new job as a
result. Online learning courses to help boost IT skills are recommended for
older people who have been made redundant and who may lack confidence in
their skills.
The Employment Relations Minister Ed Davey recently stated that it is
important that older workers feel they have the opportunity to work into
their 70s if they please. He said, "We want to give individuals greater
choice and are moving swiftly to end discrimination of this kind.
"Older workers bring with them a wealth of talent and experience as
employees and entrepreneurs. They have a vital contribution to make to our
economic recovery and long-term prosperity," he added.
