An aspiring teacher from Rochdale has given a glowing report of the further
training he undertook to achieve his goal.
Neil Penketh, 25, enrolled at the town's Hopwood Hall College after being
made redundant and realising his skills left him with limited opportunities
for further employment.
The college had recently opened a new 'Skills Centre' on Drake Road and had
begun offering training to people under the government-funded ‘Response to
Redundancy’ initiative.
Neil enrolled on and recently completed the college's Pathway to Customer
Service course, after understanding how the transferable skills of customer
service would not only make him more employable, but could also prove
extremely valuable in his ultimate job as a teacher.
"I feel I can use some of the techniques and information acquired in my own
ongoing teacher training studies," he said. "In particular, the course
helped me to develop new techniques for my future studies and work
experience."
He added that the course far exceeded his expectations and thought that
both the tutor and the content were exceptional.
'Response to Redundancy' helps people who are unemployed or at risk of
redundancy and makes training available so they can broaden their skill
range and increase their employability.
This means people who may have limited skills, possibly from falling
through the net of the education system, get a second chance at a
career.
