NVQ student rewarded with job contract

Training has helped one apprentice from Worcester get a permanent employment contract at a car repair centre.

According to the Tewkesbury Admag, 20-year-old Martin Priddey improved his capabilities while on a three-year apprenticeship course at Nationwide Autocentre.

During this time, he took an NVQ Level 3 at the company's branch in Worcester and Mr Priddey said developing his abilities had been a good experience.

"I've really enjoyed learning the skills and it's the best start to the new year I could have asked for," he told the newspaper.

He added that there is a "lot of demand" for apprenticeship places at the company, noting that a career in mechanics is "a secure one" - something that could be important because of the current financial situation in the UK.

"Now that Martin has this qualification, he can work for us as a technician and go on to train as an MOT tester or join the management training scheme if he wishes," stated Bill Duffy, the company's chief operations officer.

Mr Priddey was one of over 30 apprenticeships who won permanent contracts at the business and Mr Duffy said he is "extremely proud" of scheme.

He noted that the company plans to take on 60 more apprentices next year, which could be an opportunity for people who are looking for a career change after being made redundant.

Another man who has seen success thanks to NVQ training is Neville Midwinter of Yarmouth.

The 34-year-old left school with no qualifications and battled depression and alcoholism for ten years, but has been nominated for the NVQ National Learner of the Year award after starting courses two years ago, the Norwich Evening News reports.
