Lancashire adult learners up for awards

Lancashire adults who have been working on improving their skills are to be recognised at a special ceremony next month.

The event is due to take place on March 9th at the University of Central Lancashire and will give awards to a number of people who have boosted their capabilities during 2009.

Courses were organised by the government-funded service Lancashire Adult Learning and head of the body Peter Garrod said that the county has a "long and proud tradition" of providing its residents with the chance to learn new skills.

He praised those who have been taking courses, stating that adult learners have to balance their studies with "other responsibilities".

"I never cease to be amazed by the commitment our learners show to their courses and the significant barriers many of them have to overcome to take part," he said.

Mr Garrod added: "I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who will receive an award and to wish them well for the future."

Winners will be picked from a total of 16 categories, including the community learning award, the apprentice of the year awards, NVQ learner award and e-learning award.

One adult learner who could also win an award in the near future is Paul Quinn of Colchester.

He has been nominated to pick up an Adult Learners' Week Award for the training he takes to get the qualifications needed to become a biomedical scientist, according to the Chelmsford Weekly News.

Mr Quinn left school with only two GCSEs but has gained a number of qualifications since he started working at Colchester Hospital in 2007.
