Woman plans self-employment after adult learning course

A woman in Birmingham has told of her plans to open her own business after benefiting from an adult learning course.

Jayne Green, a 37-year-old mother of five from West Heath, told the Birmingham Mail that she is working towards an NVQ Level 3.

She is doing so with the help of an Adult Learning Grant, with the government funding providing her with £30 each week that she uses for travel as well as equipment for the course.

Ms Green explained that going back into education after a long time had been a "daunting" prospect when she started studying for the qualification two years ago.

"My life had all been about my family and I was also conscious that some of the other students in my group were the same age as two of my children," she said. "But it's been a very positive experience."

The publication observed that the Learning and Skills Council is hoping more people will apply for the Adult Learning Grant in the new year, with up to £30 being available to those over the age of 19.

It is designed to help people who go into learning and training pay for the various costs associated with it, including things such as childcare, travel and books, and was praised earlier this week by Ashley Beeston.

The 19-year-old explained that the money "really made a huge difference" to her development, having gained the confidence to begin an adult learning course after giving birth to her first child.
