Katie Richards from County Durham has been telling her local newspaper, the
Northern Echo, that getting qualifications has enabled her to get back to
work after a long period at home.
Katie gave up work some years ago to help care for her disabled daughter.
When she thought about returning to work she decided to go one step further
and start her own business.
Katie said, "My daughter is registered disabled so ever since she was born
I have been her full-time carer." She explained that having gained an NVQ
Level 2 qualification in the past, she was equipped to start her business
in an area she was already familiar with.
"Prior to my daughter being born I worked with animals and I have always
had dogs. I am a fully qualified dog groomer and have NVQ level one and two
in small animal care," added Katie, who said she also had experience
working in catteries, kennels, veterinary surgeries and groomers.
She is now the owner of Stanhope Proud Hounds, a grooming salon for all the
pampered pups in her area. Katie was able to open the business with help
from an organisation called Be Enterprising, which helps people turn their
business dreams into reality.
Her coach at Be Enterprising, Douglas Palarm, agreed that her NVQ has
helped her get a head-start with her business: “With Katie’s experience and
dedication I am sure that her business venture will be a success.”
