A remarkable single mum from Weymouth in Dorset has won a special award for
her adult learning efforts.
Michele Marlow has won the Outstanding Learner Award for the south west
region in the learndirect Achievement Awards.
Michele continued to attend her maths courses and IT qualifications classes
despite having to endure difficult chemotherapy sessions. She was suffering
from an immune system disease called Systemic Lupus but only missed one
class during her course of treatment.
The 43-year-old single mum of two teenage daughters said she decided to
take the basic skills classes to make sure she was equipped with the skills
and confidence she needed to get back to work.
Michele explained how she benefited from the courses, not just in terms of
the knowledge she gained, but also in terms of her growing
confidence.
“I was absolutely petrified when I first started and had no confidence. I
realised I had to get my head round computers and had no idea what to do,"
she said. “I was asking questions every five minutes. Luckily my tutor,
Laura Williams, was brilliant and really supportive."
During the time that Michele was very ill, she found the courses gave her
something to focus on for her future. She explained, ”The courses gave me
something to take my mind off things. I could think about something other
than myself.”
This impressive learner now says she has the confidence to attend job
interviews and is looking for an administrative role.
