New statistics from the State of the Nation 2010 report indicate that the
hospitality industry is still recruiting and training new staff despite the
effects of the recession.
The research showed that 45 per cent of the 2,000 employers in the industry
who were questioned confirmed that have taken on new staff in the year to
the end of March 2010. In addition, some 59 per cent of employers said they
were providing the same amount of training for staff as last year, with 14
per cent actually providing more training this year.
An average of £2,575 per head was spent on business training courses, and
other learning through work courses. This all came despite more than half
of last year’s respondents expecting to have to cut their training budgets
in 2010.
A promising statistic for anyone who has taken a course recently is that 36
per cent of employers said they were struggling to find people the right
skills for the jobs they have available. Skills shortages were particularly
notable among chefs, customers service staff, and in management and
leadership. As a result, it is clear that there are many opportunities for
employment within the hospitality and leisure sector for people with the
right skills.
Although 34 per cent of those questioned said they expected to ask for
government grants to help pay for training, only six per cent have actually
done so this year so far.
