Part-time and e-learning courses gaining popularity

Thursday 24th June 2010
There has been a marked increase in people taking part-time and online adult education courses instead of enrolling in three-year degree programmes.

The Open University, learndirect and other adult learning providers are finding that their courses are increasingly popular as young people struggle to pay for a full-time, three-year degrees.

learndirect offers basic skills training, such as online maths courses and English courses for people who want to boost their employability. However, their range of courses does not stop there and many school levers opt for their NVQs instead of going to university and doing a degree.

Although distance learning has traditionally been popular with people returning to study later in life, more and more under 25s see learning from home as an affordable option that will allow them to carry on earning money while they gain their qualifications – makes perfect sense really!

There are now calls for the government to increase funding options for part time student. One college professor, David Latchman, said, "The Conservative-Liberal coalition can correct the mistakes and inequalities of the past and finally deliver a higher education system that is fair for all."

Partial grants are available for such courses for some students, so it’s worth finding out more about whether you can get help with funding.

Because all our courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications, you too can get qualified with learndirect.
