A group of adult learners from Peterborough have been awarded English and
maths qualifications after completing their NVQ courses. Several also won a
specific award that is intended to get people into back reading.
Over 30 proud adult learners, who had been out of education for many years,
completed qualifications ranging from entry level to level 2 NVQ. The group
were awarded their qualifications at the John Clare Theatre on 16 June. The
qualifications are equivalent to grades A-C at GCSE.
Cheryl Thompson, the curriculum manager at the adult learning centre that
provided the training, praised the learners for having the courage to
return to education later in life. “It takes a lot of courage to get back
into education. The courses were all about helping them achieve a maths and
English qualification, which is essential and can now lead them onto a
range of courses or into employment, widening their options and
opportunities.”
Some of the learners also received the Six Book Challenge award, which was
sponsored by the Central Library. They were given their certificated by
best-selling crime novelist Peter James.
A range of maths and English courses are available through
learndirect centres around the country.
learndirect also offers e-learning options for busy people
who need to fit their adult education around work or family
