Being made redundant has given one man the change to move to Wales and start his own business.
Colin Thompson lost his job at Burtonwood Brewery in Cheshire six years ago and decided to move to Wales with his family in order to run a guesthouse, the Warrington Guardian reports.
They were inspired to take over The Hilary in Towyn, Llandudno after being told by their friends - who they often entertained at their home - that they would be able to make a living out of it.
Mr Thompson's wife, Deborah, told the news source that the closure of the brewery was "the best thing that ever happened" for her family.
"It gave us the chance to spend time together as a family and gave us a better quality of life and new interests," she said.
Ms Thompson said that while the redundancy was a worry because she had not worked since the couple had their two children, it "opened the door to a new opportunity" for them.
Her husband, 42, had worked at the brewery as an IT consultant since leaving school at 17.
Before it closed, around 2,000 people were employed at the site.
Another couple who have enjoyed success after losing their jobs is Jeremy May and Eva Chloe Vazaka.
According to the Wandsworth Guardian, they both lost their jobs within a week of each other in November 2008, but now run a successful business selling jewellery made using old books.
They were inspired to set up the business after making paper gifts for each other to celebrate their first wedding anniversary.
