Graham Morris from Cwmafan was
approaching 80 when he decided to gain skills for the 21st Century and
enrolled on a learndirect course in basic computing within his local
library.
Despite retiring over 25 years ago, Graham was determined to gain essential
digital literacy skills, and keep in contact with his 4 grandchildren.
“Reading is not enough to keep the mind active. You need new challenges and have to keep pushing yourself”, explained Graham.
That was two years ago, and Graham is now able to access the internet and email friends and family. He even has his own computer and broadband at home!
“My grandchildren still run rings around me but it is a wonderful feeling to visit them and talk to them about what they are doing on the computer. These classes have allowed me to feel included in my grandchildren’s lives and have knowledge of what interests them”, explains Graham.
Cwmafan Library, like any other local library, is situated in the heart of the community and can allow individuals to catch up with, or make friends. Graham comes to the library to learn at least once a week during the designated learndirect tutorial slots that are led by learndirect Partnership Manager Rosemary Royce, as well as utilising the library computers to study with the help of library staff at other times.
