Lucy Owen Launches Literacy and Numeracy Campaign

BBC Wales Today news-anchor Lucy Owen launches learndirect’s ‘read together, play together’ campaign at Swansea Library.

Lucy joined 10 pupils from Waun Wen Primary School to help mark the launch of the campaign by getting online and participating in the interactive game - ‘Legula Adventure’, developed by learndirect to help parents practise their literacy and numeracy skills.

The campaign aims to help raise awareness of literacy and numeracy issues among parents, by building on the benefits of learning together with their children.

The ‘Legula Adventure’ game combines maths and English-based puzzles with the colour, adventure and excitement you would expect from any top kids’ interactive game.

The campaign also has an emphasis on the importance of reading together. During the visit Lucy read learndirect’s book “Where did the river go?” which was a hit with the children. The book contains challenges to help adults with their maths and English skills, while kids enjoy the story.

Mum to baby Gabriel who is 14 months, Lucy Owen says:

"I came along today because I feel it is important to highlight adult literacy and how it can be improved. I fully support the learndirect campaign and its benefits and hope that many adults will find the campaign useful."

Head of learndirect in Wales, Jeff Greenidge adds:

“Recent studies have show that there are 26 million adults across the UK who have a maths or English need. However, as the research shows, it is not just at work where a lack of skills might hold them back, but it is also affecting them in everyday tasks such as helping their children with homework.

“The Legula Adventure aims to encourage parents to challenge their kids to a journey of fun and discovery – and improve their maths and English skills at the same time.”
