Welsh parents are being encouraged to ‘read together,
play together’ with their children in a bid to help publicise literacy
and numeracy issues among parents.
The campaign, run by learndirect is using the theme of ‘read together, play together’ as part of a child’s development to help raise awareness of literacy and numeracy issues among parents – urging parents to improve their English and maths skills.
learndirect has produced a book “Where Did The River Go” featuring colourful characters Plip and Dab, which is an interactive and fun read for children and adults, and helps reiterate the importance of learning together.
To highlight the importance of the book - local Primary school children from Abercanaid Primary School attended a group reading at Merthyr library with Plip and Dab, characters from the book.
Mike Sullivan, head teacher at Abercanaid primary school in Merthyr said:
“The children have had great fun today getting involved with this campaign which is clearly a great way to raise awareness of an important topic”.
Sue Leslie is the learndirect Partnership Manager within the WEA and adds:
“Anyone who wants a copy of the free book can pop along to the WEA learning centre situated on High Street in the centre of Merthyr town. The centre offers friendly, relaxed and informal learning for anyone who recognises that they need support improving their English and maths.”
Parents can also access a free interactive game via www.thelegulaadventure.co.uk which will also allow them to develop their ICT skills.
