Deputy Minister for Regeneration, Leighton Andrews
visited the WEA learning centre to see first hand how local people are
gaining skills and qualifications through e-learning provider
learndirect.
Situated in the heart of Merthyr, the centre has supported a number of learners, allowing them gain skills in ICT, literacy and numeracy. The majority of learners have been referred to the centre via the local Jobcentre Plus, after being made redundant from local factories such as Hoover.
Leighton Andrews said: "The WEA learning centre in Merthyr is making a real difference in the area. Through learndirect, the centre offers just-in-time, flexible, personalised learning which is needed in the area. It is evident more than ever how ICT skills are essential in today's job market and encouraging to see so many willing to gain the skills they need."
