Llwynhendy parents 'reach for the stars'

Adult learners week is once again upon us and to mark Family Learning Day, AM Helen Mary Jones officially launched the new community adult learning centre in Bryn Teg School, Llwynhendy. Teamed with Llwynhendy’s Community First, Coleg Sir Gâr and online learning provider, learndirect; Bryn Teg School will now be able to offer all adults with the opportunity to learn essential maths, English, IT, employability and life skills.

AM Helen Mary Jones commended this latest development in Bryn Teg School and said: “Community learning venues are vital in order to offer adults, who may lack self confidence, a chance to take part in flexible learning in an informal environment. A learning centre in the community school is an excellent way to reach out to parents of the school children who urgently need to get their skills in order to gain employment or to help their children with their homework.”

Emyr Brown, ICT teacher at Bryn Teg School adds: “Bryn Teg is a thriving, forward-thinking school. The caring, supportive and stimulating environment that we create for our children is such a success that we felt it necessary to reach out to adult learners in the community. These learners may have had bad experiences with previous learning or may have simply not had the opportunity to learn for years. Our designated learning suite is informal and individuals of different ages and abilities can pop in and flexibly learn via learndirect at a pace to suit them.”

Bryn Teg School’s motto is ‘reach for the stars’ and parents and children alike can now learn in the same building to reach their potential. Parents can come to the learning centre straight after or before dropping off their children, making it as easy as possible to fit learning into their lives.

The new learndirect centre will be available to the local community every Wednesday from 10am – 12pm and then again from 1pm – 3pm. Visit www.ysgolbrynteg.ik.org for more information. Learners can also gain skills and qualifications in Communities First, Llwynhendy anytime from Monday to Friday.
