Minister for Heritage attends first ESOL class in Caernarfon

This week, Coleg Menai Caernarfon launched a brand new English Language course aimed at people for whom English is not their first language.

The Minister for Heritage, Alun Fred Jones visited Coleg Menai Caernarfon to get a taste of the ELLIS course which is an online language learning system from.

Lynn Lording–Jones, who runs ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses at Coleg Menai, said: “We are very pleased to be able to offer this course at the Coleg Menai Caernarfon site for the first time. Students living locally will now be able to drop in to Coleg Menai Caernarfon at a time that suits them. On the course students use computers to learn English – they get to record their voice, practice sounds, watch video clips of real life situations and learn at a speed that suits them.”

One student, Eva Chapela Orri, chatted to the Minister about what she liked about the ELLIS course. Eva, aged 24 who’s originally from Spain, said: “I came to this country to improve my English language. I am currently studying a full time ESOL course and ELLIS is a module on that course. I find it very useful as you get to listen to people speaking the language – which is something I sometimes find difficult to understand.”
